Prompt Gap Analysis for AI Search Answers

See where buyer questions in AI tools miss your brand and your proof.

We'll reply with a written proposal: the work, what we need from you and an estimated timeline.

The hidden problems

Why AI visibility reports often claim more than they really know

Generic questions, different AI tools lumped together, no record of how answers were collected and visibility scores with nothing behind them can turn a small sample into a false picture of what buyers ask or where you rank.

  • The question list is just a renamed keyword list

The questions leave out real buyer roles, comparisons, worries, limits, locations and the decisions people make next.

  • Different AI tools are lumped together

Chat apps, search features, API results, logged-in and logged-out states and crawler logs (records of robot visits) are combined as if they were one steady source.

  • Nobody can repeat the answer

The exact wording, date, country, language, account, login state, AI model or access method was never recorded.

  • Quoted sources lose the point they supported

A web address is counted without the sentence in the answer, the context of the quote, the other sources named or what the page is actually for.

  • Crawler access is passed off as a visibility score

Robots settings (rules about which robots may read your site) or robot visits are presented as proof that AI tools pulled in your content, recommended you, quoted you or that buyers want you.

  • The report just says "add more content"

Gaps are not linked to specific buyer questions, your own pages, missing proof, priority, cost, a test of done or the person responsible.

Exactly what's included

What our prompt gap analysis includes

See where your brand, products, expertise and proof show up, or go missing, when typical buyer questions (prompts) are asked in the exact AI assistants, such as ChatGPT, and search features we agree on. Softscotch records the question, the AI tool or search feature, the country, language, whether we were logged in, the date, the answer and the sources it named. We then link the gaps that matter to your web pages, your proof and the people responsible for fixing them. The sample is a snapshot of what we saw, not a fixed ranking or a complete map of every question buyers ask.

Eight areas of work take you from evidence about real buyer questions and an agreed method, through dated records of answers, gaps in your pages and proof, a list of priorities and a walkthrough with your team, to a handover you can repeat later.

Where questions come from and what buyers want

We use approved evidence from customers, sales, customer service, search data and your market to set typical groups of questions and what to leave out.

Method for AI tools, countries and login states

We name the exact AI assistants or search features, how we access them, accounts, countries, languages, login states, dates, number of repeat runs and how answers are recorded.

Dated record of questions, answers and sources

We keep the exact wording, answers, errors, quoted web addresses, source lists, time stamps and context for the agreed sample.

Review of your brand, competitors and quoted pages

We record how you are described, mentions, comparisons, what each source was used for, claims with nothing behind them and useful evidence from competitors, without copying their claims.

Map of gaps in content, facts and proof

We link important findings to your own pages, product or profile facts, proof only you can provide, technical access for AI robots and separate work to build your reputation elsewhere.

Aa

Priorities and a task plan ready to assign

We score how much each gap matters to buyers, how serious it is, how sure we are, effort, risk, what it depends on, cost and who will deliver it.

Handover for repeat checks you can compare

We provide the questions to rerun, the context, storage, review rules, a record of changes, how to handle odd results and when the next decision is due.

Findings walkthrough with your team

We take your team through the results in a live session, explain what the answers and gaps mean in plain terms and answer questions. Together we agree who owns each priority, so the findings turn into real work instead of a report that sits unread.

Why Softscotch

How we keep every answer tied to the exact question and AI tool

Answers, brands, competitors, sources and recommendations stay linked to the exact AI tool or search feature, date, country, login state and the way we collected them.

Questions start from real buying evidence

The sample reflects the real choices and limits your customers face, not every possible way of wording a question.

Each AI tool is kept separate

Every finding names the AI assistant or search feature, whether we used the app or an API, login state, country, language and access method.

Answers are dated records

Exact questions, answers, errors and sources stay linked to time stamps and a written method for how they were collected.

Quoted sources keep their purpose

We check each quoted page against the actual claim or recommendation it seemed to support in the answer.

Recommendations name the work

Every priority states the page, the proof, the person responsible, what it depends on, the cost limit and how we will know it's done.

Repeat runs stay honest about uncertainty

Before reading anything into changes, repeat runs record any changes to the questions, the AI tools, your website and anything that was unavailable.

Research details

The 36 decisions behind a question sample you can trust

The work covers where questions come from, how many to ask, access to each AI tool, recording answers, reviewing sources, what answers say about your brand, priorities, costs and repeat runs.

Is the study a fit, which questions and who decides
The business decision the study supportsState which budget, content, proof or market decision the question sample should help you make.
Buyer roles and situationsName the people, the stages of buying they are at, the tasks they want done, their limits, risks and locations that the sample covers.
Where questions come fromRecord whether each question comes from customers, sales calls, service teams, search data, research or approved expert judgment.
Brands, products and competitors includedList the exact brands, products, services, organizations and competitors included, with reasons and what is left out.
Countries, languages and login statesSet the countries, languages, whether we are logged in or anonymous, what we assume about personalized answers and which versions we can't test.
Who reviews and approves sharingName who approves the sample, the factual findings, how competitors are described, the work priorities and any outside use of the results.
AI tools and how we access them
The named AI assistant or search featureRecord the exact product and feature used, instead of grouping every AI answer under one label.
App, API or research methodState whether we used the normal consumer app, an official API, an outside research tool or another clearly agreed method.
Account and contextKeep a note of the plan, login, earlier messages in the chat, location settings, personalization and anything else visible that may change the answer.
When things are unavailable or failDecide what to record when an AI tool, feature, model, source list or answer is unavailable or changes.
Question sample and coverage
Groups of buyer questionsSort approved questions into groups: finding options, needs, comparisons, risks, proof, choosing, getting started and follow-up.
Natural question wordingWrite questions the way real people ask them, noting our assumptions, instead of mechanically repeating one template that leaves out brand names.
Follow-up and conversation rulesState whether follow-up questions are included, which earlier messages are kept and how that context changes the answer.
Why this many questions and runsExplain the number of questions and repeat runs, which areas are left out on purpose and why the sample can't cover everything.
Recording answers and sources
Exact question and answer recordStore the wording, the answer, any refusal, error or unavailable message, the date, time and a record ID.
How you are mentioned and describedRecord how your brand, product, competitors and category are described, including factual errors and missing important details.
Quoted sources in contextKeep each quoted web address or source list linked to the sentence in the answer and the recommendation it seemed to support.
Record quality and storageSet rules for screenshots or saved text, file names, how long records are kept, who can see them, hiding private details, who reviews them and checks that records weren't changed.
Pages, claims and missing proof
What kind of page was quotedCheck whether the source is a product, service, guide, profile, news, directory, review or some other useful type of page.
Does your page answer the question?Check whether your own relevant page answers the buyer's question directly, with accurate details, proof and a clear next step.
Checking claims and contradictionsCompare what answers say with your approved business facts, original sources, important conditions and any differences still unresolved.
Chances to publish original proofFind expert explanations, product data, examples, demonstrations, research or customer proof that your business can legitimately publish.
Access, measuring and limits
AI robots and robots.txt reviewKeep your written settings for which AI robots may read your site separate from robot visits we can see, content AI tools actually pulled in, quotes, visits sent to your site and business results.
Visits sent to your site and what visitors doTrack visits that AI tools send to your site, and what those visitors do, separately from answers where nobody clicks and from quoted sources.
What tools and APIs coverRecord which AI tools are covered, how data is collected, the fields returned, usage limits, costs, storage and known blind spots.
No fixed rankingMake it clear that sample answers and the order of sources can change, and that they don't prove a permanent position or show every question buyers ask.
Priorities and handing over the work
Value to buyers and how serious the gap isRate how directly the gap affects an important question, and whether the current answer leaves you out, is weak, is wrong or has nothing to back it up.
How sure we areTell apart findings that repeat from one-off answers, and state where evidence conflicts, is missing or keeps changing.
Tasks for your own contentName the page, section, fact, example, comparison, proof or organized data that needs to be delivered as separate work.
Technical or access tasksFind work on AI robots, robots rules, how pages load, page titles and descriptions, profiles, data feeds or monitoring for the right specialist.
Cost, what it depends on and who owns itState the research, content, technical, digital PR, API, tool, storage and review needs, plus the person responsible.
Repeat checks and decisions
Pack for repeat runsKeep the approved questions, AI tools, context, accounts, countries, languages, time stamps and instructions for recording answers.
Record of changesLog changes to your website content, product facts, profiles, technical settings, press and media activity and the AI tools themselves between runs.
How much answers changeShow answers that stayed the same, changed, went missing, contradicted each other or were unavailable, without calling every difference a gain or a loss.
Keeping findings and results apartTreat appearing in an answer, being quoted, visits sent to your site, what visitors do, leads, sales and proof that our work caused a change as different kinds of evidence.
Summary of the next decision for leadersRecommend whether to keep, correct, create, strengthen, look into, repeat or stop, with how sure we are, the cost and the person responsible.
Research and implementation tools

The exact AI tools and access methods we name decide what the evidence shows

Chat apps, search features, APIs (direct software connections to an AI tool), guides on AI crawlers (the robots that read websites for AI tools) and monitoring tools are never blended into one made-up visibility score.

What we check

Seven checks, from agreeing the method to tasks ready to hand over

Each check records what we saw, what is still unknown, which gap matters, who owns it and how a later run can be compared fairly.

Check 01 · Study decision and where questions come from

The decision the study supports and where questions come from

We define the business decision and the evidence used to build the question sample.

The sample can be limited and typical of your buyers, but it can't capture every buyer question or how people will word questions in the future.

Scope startState which content, market, proof or spending decision the study should help your business make, and why it matters.
Proof inputCollect approved questions from customers, sales, service, search data, research and subject experts.
Method structureGroup buyer roles, situations, needs, worries and objections, comparisons, risks, locations and the decisions buyers make next.
Check go liveReview which brands, products, competitors, countries, languages and business priorities are included or left out.
Limit controlFlag made-up demand, too much keyword-style wording, missing login states and topics that don't matter to your business.
Decision resultApprove the question groups, the reasons for the sample, who owns the facts and the next step in the method.
Check 02 · AI tools, accounts and method

AI tools, accounts and how we record answers

We name every product, account state and collection method before any questions are asked.

Answers can change depending on the AI tool, account, earlier messages, country and language settings, AI model and time.

Scope startList the exact AI assistants, search features, apps, APIs or approved research tools included in the study.
Proof inputRecord access, account plan, whether we are logged in, country, language, location, earlier messages and any visible AI model details.
Method structureSet the question wording, follow-ups, repeat runs, time stamps, record IDs, screenshots or saved text and storage.
Check go liveTest the method on typical questions, refusals, answers with no sources, errors and features that aren't available.
Limit controlRecord AI tools we can't test, blind spots in outside tools, apps that keep changing and context we can't keep the same.
Decision resultApprove the method, the format of the evidence, the cost, privacy decisions and who will run the sample.
Check 03 · Dated record of questions and answers

Dated record of questions and answers

We keep enough detail for another reviewer to understand exactly what we saw, and when.

A recorded answer is a dated result. It isn't a fixed position, and it doesn't show how the AI model actually reasoned.

Scope startAsk only the approved questions and keep the exact wording, follow-up context, AI tool, account state and time stamp.
Proof inputRecord the full visible answer, any refusal or error, quoted web addresses, the source list and any other details available.
Method structureGive everything stable IDs that link each question, answer, brand finding, source and later review note.
Check go liveCheck for missing text, cut-off screenshots, duplicate runs, mismatched context and failures in recording or storage.
Limit controlFlag answers that can't be repeated, or AI tools whose answers can't be saved together with enough context.
Decision resultAccept the first set of records, or rerun only the failed questions using the same recorded method.
Check 04 · Your brand, competitors and quoted pages

Review of your brand, competitors and quoted pages

We assess what the answers say and which evidence seems to back up what they say.

A competitor appearing in a sample is something we saw. It doesn't prove their market share or that their content is better.

Scope startRecord mentions of your brand, products, services, category and competitors, plus the wording and where in the answer they appear.
Proof inputCheck important descriptions, comparisons, recommendations, claims, conditions, things left out and factual contradictions.
Method structureMatch quoted pages or listed sources to the specific sentence or recommendation they seemed to support.
Check go liveReview the type of source, who owns it, how current it is, whether it is an original or second-hand source, how useful it is to buyers and relevant page features.
Limit controlAvoid copying competitor claims, or guessing how the AI tool picks sources just from the sources we can see.
Decision resultApprove factual corrections, meaningful patterns, disputed findings and gaps that need a closer look at your own pages.
Check 05 · Your pages and missing proof

Your own pages and missing proof

We link important findings to work your business can actually own and carry out.

The right next step may be content, product facts, profiles, technical access, building your reputation elsewhere, or doing nothing.

Scope startMatch each priority buyer question to your most relevant page, profile, data feed, piece of proof or a resource that is missing.
Proof inputCheck whether that resource can be reached by AI tools, is current, accurate, specific, original enough and matches the question it is meant to answer.
Method structureFind missing facts, expert explanations, examples, demonstrations, comparisons, data, important conditions and supporting sources.
Check go liveKeep writing, technical SEO, profile or data feed work, AI robot settings, digital PR, paid ads, monitoring and specialist work separate.
Limit controlFlag recommendations based on one answer that keeps changing, assumptions with no support, evidence we can't get or facts only you can confirm.
Decision resultApprove only gaps that are ready to assign, each with a deliverable, what it depends on, a test of done and a business reason.
Check 06 · Priorities, costs and delivery plan

Priorities, costs and delivery plan

We rank gaps by how much they matter to buyers and how strong the evidence is, not by how many questions they affect.

Doing the work is a separate decision, and it doesn't promise you will be included or quoted later.

Scope startRate the buyer decision, business importance, how serious the factual problem is, the current state of the page and any possible harm.
Proof inputGive weight to findings that repeat, runs that conflict, how many AI tools were covered, source quality and how sure we are about the gap.
Method structureEstimate the effort for research, writing, expert review, technical work, media, digital PR, tools and monitoring.
Check go livePut dependencies in order, such as approved product facts, experts, rights, pages, access, data feeds or development work.
Limit controlRecord the people on your side who are responsible, outside costs, what is and isn't delivered, tests of done and reasons to delay or reject work.
Decision resultApprove the priority map and hand each item to the right person or add it to their list of next tasks.
Check 07 · Repeat checks and the limits of results

Repeat checks and the limits of results

We give you a repeat run you can compare, without turning any change into a promise of results.

AI tools and their answers can change even when nothing on your website has changed.

Scope startReuse the approved questions, AI tools, accounts, context, countries, languages, timing rules and recording methods.
Proof inputLog new content, product changes, profiles, AI robot settings, media coverage, competitor activity and updates to the AI tools.
Method structureCompare answers that stayed the same, changed, went missing, contradicted each other, quoted sources, quoted nothing, failed or were unavailable, with counts for each.
Check go liveKeep AI robot visits, mentions in answers, quotes, visits sent to your site, what visitors do, leads and sales as separate findings.
Limit controlNever claim our work caused a change, that you hold a fixed ranking or that everything is covered, based on a small before-and-after sample.
Decision resultChoose to repeat, look into, correct, deliver separate work, keep things as they are or stop, and name the next person responsible.

How we compare

How we compare with a typical AI visibility tool: a dated research sample, not an AI rank tracker

We show exactly what was asked and what came back, why a gap matters to a buyer and which proof on your own pages can be improved.

The risk of using a different agency for everything
  • Turns keywords straight into questions
  • Blends every AI assistant into one score
  • Hides the account, country and language used
  • Treats one answer as a ranking
  • Lists quoted sources without the claims they support
  • Treats AI robot visits as being visible
  • Copies what competitors are recommended for
  • Just says "publish more FAQs"
  • Bundles the fixing work into the measuring
  • Promises more mentions or quotes
vs
Softscotch
  • Starts with real buyer decisions
  • Names every AI tool and how it was accessed
  • Keeps the login state, language and time stamp
  • Treats every answer as a dated sample
  • Links sources to the sentences they supported
  • Keeps robot access, answers and visits separate
  • Checks facts and your own proof
  • Names the pages, proof and people responsible
  • Prices the fixing work separately
  • Is clear that answers change and results have limits

Ethical, transparent, always on

One accountable team, strictly white-hat (only methods search engines and platforms allow), no shortcuts and no surprises. Support whenever you need it.

One plan, full-stack access

One Softscotch plan gives you access to the full service stack, coordinated around your priorities.

You do not need a separate agency or retainer for every channel. Your plan can draw from search, paid media, web, ecommerce, outreach, automation, lead generation, messaging, content, creative and operations. The agreed scope sets what is active, in what order and at what capacity.

Pricing approach

One price for everything, not a stack of separate retainers.

You get one price for your whole marketing, not a separate retainer for every service. SEO, paid ads, your website, automations, cold email and newsletters, we run all of it as a single scope, so you get the most result for what you pay. Agencies sell each of these on its own, so the invoice climbs whether or not that line drives a single lead.

Bought separately, service by service

A different agency or retainer for each service. The bill stacks up fast, and keeps climbing whether or not each one moves a single lead.

All of it, one scope

We run your whole marketing as one engagement, so you get the most result for what you pay, not a pile of disconnected invoices.

Content needsHow much new writing, rewriting and production the plan calls for.

Prompt gap analysis FAQs

These answers explain the question sample, which AI tools are included, competitors, how answers are recorded, what you get, costs, timing, who owns what and the limits.

Filter
What is included in a prompt gap analysis?

Your proposal can include researching where buyer questions come from, grouping questions by what buyers want, asking them in named AI assistants and search features, dated records of answers and sources, what answers say about your brand and competitors, a review of quoted pages, gaps in your content and proof, priorities, a walkthrough of the findings with your team and a pack for repeat checks. It names the exact sample.

Where do the questions come from?

They can come from approved customer questions, sales and service records, search data, market research and subject experts. We write down where each one came from, and we don't treat a keyword list as the whole buyer journey.

Which AI tools are included?

Only the exact AI assistants, search features, apps, APIs, accounts and login states named in your proposal. Each product is recorded and reported separately, never blended together.

Does the question list cover every buyer question?

No. It is a limited sample chosen for clear reasons. The report explains which roles, decisions, countries and question groups are covered, what is left out and why it can't cover everything.

What details are recorded for each answer?

We keep the exact question, any earlier messages in the chat, the AI tool, how we accessed it, the visible account or AI model details, country, language, date, time, the answer, any error and the quoted sources the method can capture.

How are competitors chosen?

You approve which competitors and comparisons are included. We can also include known alternatives and organizations that show up in the sample, without claiming the list reflects full market share.

What does it prove when an AI answer quotes a source?

It proves that the recorded answer visibly referred to that source in that run. It doesn't show the full process the AI tool used to find sources, and it doesn't guarantee the page will be quoted again.

Does allowing AI crawlers guarantee I'll show up in ChatGPT or other AI tools?

No. OpenAI's official guides treat OAI-SearchBot (the robot that finds pages for ChatGPT search) separately from its other robots, such as the one that collects training data. Allowing OAI-SearchBot keeps your site eligible to appear in ChatGPT search results, but it doesn't guarantee that your pages will be used, included, quoted, placed well or send you visitors.

Does this give me an AI ranking?

No. Answers and the order of sources can change between runs, AI tools, users, countries and over time. We report dated findings and patterns that repeat, not a fixed ranking that applies everywhere.

Do you check answers for factual errors?

Yes. We compare important descriptions and claims with facts you have approved and with original sources where available, then record contradictions, missing conditions and disputed points for the right person to deal with.

Will you update our content or technical settings?

Only when a separate piece of work names the pages, wording, profiles, data feeds, AI robot settings, technical work, reviews and tests of done. The core service is measuring and setting priorities.

What outside costs may apply?

API usage fees, research or visibility tools, monitoring, storage, extra accounts, translation, specialist reviews, content, technical work and digital PR are separate unless they are listed and priced.

What does the report keep separate?

It keeps apart your settings for AI robots, robot visits, appearing in sample answers, being quoted, visits sent to your site, what visitors do there, leads, sales and proof that our work caused a change, treating each as a different kind of evidence.

Can you repeat the study later?

Yes. The handover keeps the questions, AI tools, context and recording rules, and the repeat report notes changes to the AI tools, changes to your website, failures and anything we couldn't keep the same.

If the answers change, does that prove our work caused it?

No. Updates to the AI tools, different wording, login state, competitors and other changes can all change answers. Stronger proof would need a carefully controlled test, and that may not be possible.

Can you guarantee mentions, quotes or traffic?

No. Softscotch is responsible for the agreed sample, the analysis and the handover. The AI companies control how their robots read sites, which sources they use and what answers they give, and buyer behavior and your offer affect business results.

How long does a first study take?

Agreeing the method and the groups of questions usually takes 3 to 5 working days. A limited first round of recording answers and a priority map usually take 1 to 2 weeks. More AI tools, languages, questions, repeat runs and access limits make it longer.

How is prompt gap analysis priced?

The price depends on the number of AI tools, accounts, countries, languages, question groups, runs, records, competitors, sources, APIs, other tools, storage, how detailed the review is and the handover work. Your proposal sets out exactly what is included first.
