Retargeting Services

Win back interested people without following everyone around the internet.

We'll reply with a written proposal: the work, what we need from you and an estimated timeline.

The hidden problems

Where retargeting wastes your budget and annoys your customers

Retargeting fails quietly. Every visitor lands in one big list, people who already bought keep seeing ads, the same ad runs forever, product details go out of date, and sales the ad platform takes credit for get reported as money won back.

  • Everyone lands in the same audience

Someone who viewed your pricing page, someone who left right away, a lead you are already talking to, a past buyer and your own staff all see the same ad, even though their interest and suitability are very different.

  • Past buyers keep seeing ads

Updates from your CRM (customer database) reach the ad platforms late or use IDs that don't match, so people who already bought keep seeing ads meant to win new customers.

  • The ads never move past the first reminder

There is no planned order of messages: no proof, no answers to common doubts, no other options, no reason to act now and no polite point to stop as time since the visit goes by.

  • Product ads show the wrong details

The product ID tracked on your site, the record in your product catalog, the price, stock status, image and landing page don't agree at the moment the ad is shown.

  • Average figures hide ad fatigue

Overall results hide small groups who see the same ad again and again, while reach, the quality of responses and your brand's reputation quietly get worse.

  • Platform credit is mistaken for real extra sales

The ad platform's lookback window (the period after an ad view or click in which it claims a sale) takes credit with no comparison group and no check for overlap with your own emails, profit margin, returns or sales that would have happened anyway.

Exactly what's included

A clear path from someone's earlier interest to a useful next step

Retargeting (showing ads to people who have already visited your website, app or store) can win back real interest, but you shouldn't pay to follow everyone who has ever stopped by. We decide who should see your ads right now, leave out people who already bought and leads that aren't a fit, and match the message to how recently and how seriously each person showed interest. We check that product details and the pages your ads link to are correct, test the whole path live and show you where the ad platform's credit for sales differs from the real value to your business.

Eight areas of work connect who enters each audience, who is left out, the order of your messages, accurate product data (your feed: the product list you send to ad platforms), setup, fair testing, ongoing management and an honest report on the value actually won back.

Who to reach and why

We list every audience from your website, app, CRM, customer lists and products, with where it comes from, why it's used, whether people gave permission, its size, how recent it is and any platform rules that limit it.

Audience rules

We define what action puts someone into an audience, who is left out, how far back to look, how people are matched, which customer or lead stages count, how quickly updates must flow and which system has the final say, with a named owner.

Message order

We match reminder, proof, answers to doubts, other options, reasons to act now and closing messages to what people did, how recently they did it and where they stand with your business today.

Product ad accuracy

We check that the product IDs tracked on your site match your product feed records, stock, price, images, offer terms and final landing pages, using a sample of typical products.

{}

Tracking and platform setup

We set up the audiences you're allowed to use, browser and server tracking (data sent from people's browsers and from your own systems), campaign limits, budgets and error checks, and confirm they work in your account today.

Exclusions and ad frequency limits

We leave out past buyers, poor-fit leads, staff, people in sensitive situations and people who just took action, and set clear, visible limits on how often people see ads and how long they stay in an audience.

Comparison tests and real value

We design fair comparison tests and match the platform's credit against overlap with other channels, lead quality, profit margin, returns and accepted proof of extra sales.

Ongoing management and regular reports

We check audiences, spend, how often people see your ads and tracking errors on a regular schedule, refresh ads people have seen too often and send you a plain-English report on what changed and what we recommend next.

Why Softscotch

Clear rules on who sees your ads, who is left out and what it's really worth

Every audience, message, exclusion and tracked action has a written rule for where it comes from, a named owner, a tested setup, its known limits and a clear trigger for when it needs updating.

Audience rules start in your own systems

Each campaign rule points to the fact in your CRM, tracking or product catalog that decides who qualifies, instead of an exclusion someone has to remember to add by hand.

Permission stays linked to how data is used

Decisions about collecting, matching, personalizing and excluding data keep a record of their purpose, the country or region rules involved and who approved them.

Messages move forward on purpose

Every ad has a job, an audience it is meant for, proof it must show, a page it links to and a point where people stop seeing it.

Product details are tested from start to finish

We check the product someone viewed, the matching item in your feed, the ad as shown, the offer and the landing page together as one sample path.

Ad frequency and overlap stay visible

Our report shows how often different people saw ads, how audiences shrink and fade over time and where ads clash with your own emails or other paid follow-up.

Value is checked against real results

Sales the platform credits to ads are read next to comparison-group results, lead quality, profit margin, returns and anything that is still uncertain.

Campaign decisions

Everything your retargeting campaign needs to stay relevant

The campaign plan covers why each audience exists, customer permission (consent), audience rules, how recent each visit was, the order of messages, product accuracy, tracking checks, how often people see ads, comparison groups and results that matter to your business.

Basics and limits
Is retargeting right for you and who owns whatConfirm there is real earlier interest worth following up, and name who owns the budget, data, ads, landing pages and launches.
Defining a good result and the value won backDefine the action that counts as a good result, the most you can afford to pay for it, how profit margin is counted and the comparison you need to make a spending decision.
Markets, platforms and the purpose of each audienceAgree the markets, platforms and allowed reason for using each source audience before anything is set up.
The limits of measurement and platform creditWrite down lookback settings, overlap between channels, missing data and why the platform's credit doesn't prove the ads caused the sale.
Turning consent, privacy and policy decisions into rulesTurn your approved decisions on consent, privacy and platform rules into clear rules for collecting data, matching people and running ads.
Who can launch, pause and handle problemsName who can start, change or stop spending when a problem with platform rules, data, the feed or customers comes up.
Information and proof
Audience entry and exit rulesSpell out how people enter, how recent they must be, how they move forward, who is excluded, when they drop out and when they can come back, for every audience group.
Message order planGive each stage its own job, proof point, offer, landing page and exit point.
Accurate product adsKeep the IDs of viewed products matched to the current price, stock, image and landing page in your feed.
Exclusions and ad frequency limitsLeave out past buyers, poor-fit leads and people who shouldn't see ads, while limiting how often people see ads based on how recent their visit was.
Structure and definitions
Comparison tests and audience fadeDesign a fair comparison (a holdout group that doesn't see the ads) and show when an older audience or mixed-up test groups weaken the result.
Reporting the value won backConnect spend and the sales the platform credits to lead quality, profit margin, returns, overlap with other channels and what is still uncertain.
Website, app and CRM tracking mapMap the few tracked actions that change who qualifies for an audience or prove a meaningful business result.
How people are matched, and what stays unknownWrite down which identifiers (such as email or phone number) you allow, how records are matched and where we can't tell who someone is.
Making the changes
Audience rules and lookback listList each audience rule, its source, time window, exclusions, owner and the date it was last checked.
Syncing customer and lead stages from your CRMUpdate who can see ads when a lead qualifies, is ruled out, buys, opts out or moves to a new stage.
Matching tracked products to your product feedCross-check the product IDs tracked in people's browsers against your catalog IDs before dynamic ads (ads that show the exact products someone viewed) can run.
Keeping ad, offer and landing page in stepCheck that what the ad says, the offer terms, the product status and the landing page still match at the moment someone clicks.
Safety checks
Ad ideas and message order mapLabel each ad by audience stage, the doubt it answers, its proof, its format and the approved next step.
Offer terms, end dates and required noticesTrack price, who qualifies, end dates and important conditions across every ad and every landing page version.
Setting up campaigns and audiences on each platformSet up only approved goals, audiences, exclusions, ad placements, budgets and credit (attribution) settings in your live account.
Testing sample paths and exclusionsBefore launch, test journeys for people who qualify, people who are excluded, people who bought, people whose visit is too old and people who said no to tracking.
Testing and improving
Improving by ad frequency and time since visitCompare how often people saw ads and how they responded, grouped by how long ago they visited, before changing limits or spend.
Spotting tired ads and a weak message orderTell apart a message people are tired of from a poor audience fit, weak delivery or a broken landing page.
Checking what happens after the clickLook at page speed, whether the page matches the ad, form completion, lead quality and where people drop off after the click.
Audience overlap across platformsEstimate how many people see ads on more than one platform, without claiming person-by-person certainty that the systems can't give.
Advanced work
Matching browser and server trackingCompare browser and server tracking for the same journeys: the actions, identifiers, consent status, timing and how duplicates are removed.
How fast past buyers are removedMeasure how long someone who already bought can still be shown ads, across CRM, tracking tag, feed and platform updates.
Where customer lists come from, and opt-outsKeep the approved source, purpose, permission and opt-out route on record for every customer list you upload.
Sensitive topics and very small audiencesBlock restricted targeting and audience mixes that are too sensitive or too small for the platform's rules.
Watching for product and offer changesAlert us when items run out, prices change, images break, offers expire or landing pages no longer match the ad.
Rules, upkeep and growth
Handling duplicate, late and broken tracking dataSet aside repeated, late or broken tracking data before it changes who is in an audience or how many sales are counted.
Why audiences are smaller than expectedExplain the gap between the records you have, the ones you may use, the platform's match estimate, the size that qualifies and the people the ads actually reached.
Match rates and people who can't be identifiedShow where identifiers are missing, rejected or unmatched, without treating estimates as known people.
Adjusting for margin, returns and lead qualityAdjust the business view for poor-fit leads, cancellations, returns, discounts and the profit each sale actually makes.
Log of changes, decisions and upkeepRecord important audience, ad, budget and measurement changes with the reason for each and the next review date.
Research and implementation tools

Retargeting tools we use, limited to what your accounts can support

The platforms we name are current examples of what we use. Before relying on any of them, we check your access, plan, region and how each feature works in your account today.

Look under the hood

Seven checks before any budget reaches an audience

Each check settles a question you need answered: who you may reach, which message fits, who must be left out, whether the path from ad to page works and what evidence will guide your next spending decision.

Check 01 · Who to reach and why

Audience and purpose check: who to reach and why

We list every audience from your website, app, CRM, customer lists and products, with its source, purpose, permission status, size, how recent it is and any platform rules that limit it.

For each check we record the audience rule, the live setup, a sample test, what can go wrong, the evidence, known limits, the owner and the next decision.

Proof proveConfirm the business goal, platform, market, source audience, allowed purpose, who owns the budget and what counts as a good result.
Rules defineDecide which earlier actions justify following up, and which customer, lead or permission states must never enter the audience.
Setup buildLink the tracked action to the right audience, the campaign goal, the job of the message and the business decision it supports.
What we block riskKeep sensitive, unsupported, too-small, out-of-date or unclear-rights audiences out of any live campaign.
Final check sign-offReview sample records of people who qualify and people who don't with your data, privacy and advertising owners.
Next step decideApprove the purpose of each audience, or write down why paid follow-up isn't a good fit right now.
Check 02 · Audience rules

Audience rules: who enters, who leaves and when

We define the actions that add people to audiences, who is left out, how far back to look, how people are matched, which customer or lead stages count, how fast updates must flow and which system has the final say, with a named owner.

For each check we record the audience rule, the live setup, a sample test, what can go wrong, the evidence, known limits, the owner and the next decision.

Proof proveInspect tracked actions, timestamps, consent status, how people are identified, CRM stage, purchase status and who is in each platform audience today.
Rules defineSet rules for entry, time since visit, moving forward, exclusion, dropping out, refreshing and coming back for every named audience.
Setup buildBuild audience lists from approved rules, and keep the reason and the source time for each move between stages.
What we block riskLeave out records with missing permission, unclear identity, broken tracking data or an unclear customer status.
Final check sign-offTest the full path for visitors, product viewers, people who added to cart, leads, buyers, poor-fit leads and people who opted out.
Next step decideSet regular refresh checks, and name who fixes slow CRM updates or audiences that turn out unexpectedly small.
Check 03 · Message order

Message order: what each ad says and when

We match reminder, proof, answers to doubts, other options, reasons to act now and closing messages to what people did, how recently they did it and where they stand with your business today.

For each check we record the audience rule, the live setup, a sample test, what can go wrong, the evidence, known limits, the owner and the next decision.

Proof proveList approved ads, claims, proof, offers, landing pages and how often each audience age and stage currently sees them.
Rules defineGive awareness, doubt-handling, product and come-back messages separate jobs, frequency limits, landing pages and stop points.
Setup buildLink every ad version to one audience stage and the next useful step for the buyer.
What we block riskPause expired offers, claims you can't back up, tired ad versions and ads that link to a page that doesn't match.
Final check sign-offPreview every format and route, then confirm the message order, how often ads show and that buyers stop seeing them.
Next step decideApprove the first message order and name owners for refreshing ads, reviewing claims and working out why results change.
Check 04 · Product ad accuracy

Product ad accuracy: the right item, price and page

We check that the product IDs tracked on your site match your feed records, stock, price, images, offer terms and final landing pages, using a sample of typical products.

For each check we record the audience rule, the live setup, a sample test, what can go wrong, the evidence, known limits, the owner and the next decision.

Proof proveCompare tracked product views with your live catalog IDs, stock levels, price, image, offer and landing page.
Rules defineDecide which product data is the official source, how often it updates, the backup ad to show and when an item should be held back.
Setup buildLink the approved tracked ID to the right feed item and the current landing page before any ad is shown.
What we block riskBlock missing items, wrong currencies, out-of-stock products, expired discounts and landing pages that contradict the ad.
Final check sign-offTest best sellers, product variants (such as sizes and colors), sale items, out-of-stock items and newly added products across the feed, ad preview and page.
Next step decideName owners for fixing feed errors, ending expired offers and fixing store pages, with a clear route to pause the campaign.
Check 05 · Tracking and platform setup

Tracking and platform setup that you can check

We set up allowed audiences, browser and server tracking, campaign limits, budgets and error checks, and confirm they work in your account today.

For each check we record the audience rule, the live setup, a sample test, what can go wrong, the evidence, known limits, the owner and the next decision.

Proof proveInspect browser, server, CRM and platform tracking with its consent status, identifiers, timestamps and current error reports.
Rules defineSpell out the actions to track, the details allowed with them, the rule for duplicates, how each maps to an audience and the platform settings.
Setup buildSet up the approved campaign and check that sample tracked actions change the intended audience exactly once.
What we block riskSet aside tracking data where consent was refused, or that is broken, repeated, late or conflicting, instead of treating it as valid.
Final check sign-offCompare the browser and server paths, platform error reports, audience size estimates and sales records for the same tests.
Next step decideApprove launch only once every important tracking gap has an owner, a note on its effect and a plan to monitor it.
Check 06 · Exclusions and ad frequency limits

Exclusions and limits on how often people see ads

We leave out past buyers, poor-fit leads, staff, people in sensitive situations and people who just took action, and set visible limits on how often people see ads and how long they stay in an audience.

For each check we record the audience rule, the live setup, a sample test, what can go wrong, the evidence, known limits, the owner and the next decision.

Aa
Proof proveMeasure how long it takes for buyers, poor-fit leads, opt-outs and other exclusions to reach your CRM, source lists and ad platforms.
Rules defineSet which exclusions win when rules clash, how fast updates should happen, limits on ad views, time bands, rest periods and when manual changes are allowed.
Setup buildApply exclusions in one central place before ads are delivered, and record why each audience group can still see ads.
What we block riskPause the affected groups when exclusions are out of date, customer records disagree or ad views go above the agreed range.
Final check sign-offTest cases for new buyers, refunds, ruled-out leads, opt-outs, repeat visitors and people seeing ads on several platforms.
Next step decideSet daily checks during the launch period and name who changes limits, refreshes ads or stops an audience.
Check 07 · Comparison tests and real value

Comparison tests and the value won back

We design fair comparison tests and match the platform's credit against overlap with other channels, lead quality, profit margin, returns and accepted proof of extra sales.

For each check we record the audience rule, the live setup, a sample test, what can go wrong, the evidence, known limits, the owner and the next decision.

Proof proveTake a fixed snapshot of audience size, test groups, delivery, credit settings, sales, CRM results, margin, returns and anything else that changed at the same time.
Rules defineAgree the comparison, the smallest useful volume, how long to watch, rules for mixed-up groups and the business calculation before the test starts.
Setup buildLink platform results to good-quality results, while keeping sales nobody claimed, unmatched records and overlapping activity in view.
What we block riskFlag small samples, fading audiences, contact through other channels, uneven delivery and missing margin data as clear limits.
Final check sign-offMatch reported spend and sales to the original data exports, then confirm the real value with the business owner.
Next step decideDecide whether to stop, hold, refresh or grow spending, and say what evidence supports that decision.

One connected scope. Retargeting is coordinated with the strategy, creative, experience, data and reporting it depends on, so responsibilities and handoffs stay visible in one written plan.

What to expect

From audience plan to a careful first launch

We usually aim to test a sample audience and its exclusions within five to ten business days, once access, budget, approved offers, usable ads and a working landing page are ready. When the campaign can launch and when results become useful then depend on the platform's own approval rules, the size of the audience and how the ads are delivered.

How we compare

Relevant follow-up, not endless repetition

The difference is an up-to-date rule for each audience, a planned order of messages and an honest report on business results, not another campaign copied from one broad list of visitors.

The risk of using a different agency for everything
  • Starts with every site visitor
  • Uses one time window for everyone
  • Relies on the platform to identify people
  • Repeats one winning ad
  • Adds past buyers to exclusions by hand
  • Assumes an accepted feed is a correct feed
  • Only looks at average ad frequency
  • Optimizes for the platform's own credit
  • Ignores overlap with your own emails and messages
  • Calls platform-credited sales money won back
vs
Softscotch
  • Starts with an approved reason for each audience
  • Uses time windows that suit each audience stage
  • Writes down identity and consent limits
  • Plans a reminder, then proof, then a stop point
  • Syncs final CRM stages, such as bought or ruled out
  • Tests that each product matches its landing page
  • Tracks ad views by audience age and how they fade
  • Keeps platform credit separate from real extra sales
  • Measures overlap between channels
  • Checks lead quality, margin and returns

Ethical, transparent, always on

One accountable team, strictly white-hat (only methods search engines and platforms allow), no shortcuts and no surprises. Support whenever you need it.

One plan, full-stack access

One Softscotch plan gives you access to the full service stack, coordinated around your priorities.

You do not need a separate agency or retainer for every channel. Your plan can draw from search, paid media, web, ecommerce, outreach, automation, lead generation, messaging, content, creative and operations. The agreed scope sets what is active, in what order and at what capacity.

Pricing approach

One price for everything, not a stack of separate retainers.

You get one price for your whole marketing, not a separate retainer for every service. SEO, paid ads, your website, automations, cold email and newsletters, we run all of it as a single scope, so you get the most result for what you pay. Agencies sell each of these on its own, so the invoice climbs whether or not that line drives a single lead.

Bought separately, service by service

A different agency or retainer for each service. The bill stacks up fast, and keeps climbing whether or not each one moves a single lead.

All of it, one scope

We run your whole marketing as one engagement, so you get the most result for what you pay, not a pile of disconnected invoices.

Retargeting services FAQs: questions to ask before you start

These answers explain access, your right to use audience data, budget, ads, data, timing, costs and the limits on results, all before anything goes live.

Filter
What is included in your retargeting services?

The agreed scope can include checking who to reach and why, audience entry and exit rules, message order, product ad accuracy, tracking and platform setup, exclusions and ad frequency limits, ongoing management with regular reports, and comparison tests that show the real value won back. Your proposal names what we need from you, the evidence, the owners, what you get and the checks that show it works.

When is retargeting the right service?

It fits when you already show ads to past visitors, leads, customers or product viewers, but it isn't clear who is in each audience, who is left out, how messages move forward or whether the ads bring in sales you wouldn't have made anyway.

What access and information do you need?

We need your approved reasons for each audience and your markets, access to your ad accounts, tracking tags and tracked actions, consent settings, customer stage data from your CRM, product feeds, ad and offer records, landing pages, what counts as a sale or lead, profit margin figures and the names of the people who will review the work.

What evidence do you look at?

We look at audience rules, audience sizes, consent settings, the data sent with each tracked action, identity matching and duplicate removal, final customer stages in your CRM, feed items, ad sequences, landing pages, how often people see ads, platform credit settings and any data we can use for a fair comparison.

How do you set the starting point for comparison?

We take a fixed snapshot of your current audience rules, account setup, lookback windows, exclusions, tracking and feed versions, ads, landing pages, credit (attribution) windows and any other campaigns running at the same time.

How do you separate what we see from real business value?

We keep apart who qualified from who was actually reached, being reached from paying attention, platform-credited sales from real extra sales (lift), and total revenue from the value won back after lead quality and profit margin.

Can you run fair repeat tests?

Yes, when there are enough people in the audience and the test groups, consent, exclusions, controls that keep groups separate and the time to watch are good enough for an accepted comparison or fade test.

Do platform-credited results prove the ads made a difference?

No. Attribution (how a platform gives ads credit for a sale) follows that platform's own counting method. Proving real extra sales needs a fair comparison group, enough data and a clear statement of how uncertain the result is.

Do automatic suggestions decide the plan of work?

No. Automatic reports and platform suggestions are dated inputs. A named reviewer checks their evidence, limits and relevance to your business before approving any work.

Do you change live systems while you're still investigating?

Only after the audience, consent, message, feed and measurement rules are approved. Live changes go through set launch checks, and a named person has the power to pause them.

Can you guarantee platform approval or that ads will run?

No. Google, Meta and other platforms decide who can be in an audience, how people are matched, how ads are delivered and how their rules are enforced. We check how your account works today, but we can't promise access or reach.

Who makes legal, privacy and rights decisions?

You keep the final say on legal, privacy, usage rights, claims, confidentiality and required notices. Softscotch writes down how these decisions feed into the work and only carries out instructions you've approved.

What does the reporting keep separate?

Reporting keeps these apart: who qualified in your source data, the audience the platform matched, delivery, ad frequency, platform-credited sales, comparison test results, overlap between channels, lead quality, margin, returns and decisions about the value won back.

What can the evidence not prove?

A list size doesn't prove you reached people, an ad view doesn't prove anyone paid attention, a platform-credited sale doesn't prove the ad caused it, and a comparison test can't be trusted if the test groups, volume or separation between groups is weak.

What work is not part of this service?

Full CRM automation, fixing your product feed, online store work, offer strategy, making ads beyond the agreed set, setting up a consent tool and legal advice are all outside this service and scoped separately.

Can you guarantee results from retargeting?

No. Softscotch is responsible for the agreed research, setup, checks and reporting. Ad platforms, your data, customer demand, competitors, how your business runs and market conditions also affect results.

How long does the first round of work take?

Once we have working access and your decisions, we usually aim to deliver the readiness summary in three to five business days and a sample audience and exclusion test in five to ten business days. A careful first launch usually takes two to four weeks. When results become useful depends on how many people qualify for the audience, how the platform delivers ads, how long people take to buy and how the comparison test is designed. These are planning ranges, not guarantees.

How is retargeting priced?

Pricing depends on the platforms, audience sources and stages, tracking and CRM work, how many products you have, the message order, landing pages, test design, reporting and how often we review the work. Your ad spend is paid separately.
